Meet Shemia Fagan – the newest State Representative for House District 51.
The 31 year-old extreme left-wing lawyer from East Portland is known for her chronic absenteeism, votes to eliminate tax breaks for the middle class, and her unflinching support for public employees, going as far as ducking votes to protect them when they abuse children.
Although she’s billed herself as a champion for schools, she consistently opposes PERS reform – and sits on the House Committee with these bills, supporting her chair – a former Oregon Education Association lobbyist.
She refuses to answer emails from constituents about gun rights, and uses neighborhood tragedies to grandstand for the press without offering any legislative solutions to neighborhood problems.
Her performance in the House of Representatives has been nothing short of embarrassing, offering countless gaffs and deferrals to colleagues when asked the simplest questions about her bills. Perhaps it’s a good thing that she’s hardly ever there. Recently, her missed votes topped 18% – which is a record only a month-and-a-half into session.
Now that you know a little bit about Shemia’s background, take a look at some of the blog posts as we follow the votes and antics that define the many faces of Fagan.
